La columna vertebral, vista de frente o de espalda, es recta; no se inclina hacia ningún lado. Si se observa lateralmente, tiene varias curvas: las porciones cervical, dorsal, lumbar y sacrocoxÃgea se alternan en la forma de curva para conseguir que el reparto biomecánico de las cargas se haga de forma más correcta. Cada una de estas curvas puede acentuarse y sobrepasar los lÃmites normales. Pero es más habitual la desviación de la columna en alguna curva en el plano frontal. Esta deformidad se llama escoliosis. El niño o niña con escoliosis tiene los hombros a distinta altura, los omóplatos de la espalda tampoco coinciden, o sobresale uno más que el otro; la pelvis tampoco está igual, sino basculada la longitud de las piernas también parece distinta y el pantalón le queda a desigual altura en el pie. Si el paciente se inclina hacia delante, aparece una giba, una chepa, en uno de los lados de la espalda. La telerradiografÃa, que es una radiografÃa de la columna completa, confirmará la sospecha diagnóstica.
